In the vibrant community of Farsidol, Nepal a woman wakes up each morning with a renewed sense of purpose and pride. Her name is Krishna Maya.
The transformation Krishna Maya made in her life is nothing short of remarkable, but her journey from supporting her household to helping lead her community was not hers alone. This is the story of that journey—one which mirrors that of many women across Outreach International’s program partners, guided by our dedicated Human Development Facilitators (HDFs). The facilitator that guided Krishna Maya’s community, and so many others, is Lumanti.
Once known simply as “Saroj’s wife,” Krishna Maya devoted her days to household chores, caring for livestock, and nurturing her child, a daily routine like that of so many women in Farsidol. Leadership felt far away, something meant for others. But through patience, encouragement, and opportunity, she stepped into a new role. Today, she proudly serves as the treasurer of the Farsidol Tol Bikash Sanstha Community Organization, a respected voice in her community.
Leading from the Heart
Lumanti shares that Krishna Maya’s quiet strength transformed the community. She led savings groups, voiced the needs of women, and helped connect neighbors with critical resources and opportunities. Over time, she became a trusted and beloved leader.
But what made her truly remarkable were her small acts of care, like opening her home for meetings and training sessions, serving tea and cookies, and even offering her toilet for daily post-literacy classes.
In every way, Krishna Maya proved that leadership isn’t just about making decisions, it’s about being present, generous, and having the courage to lift others as you yourself rise.
Fostering Change: The Role of Facilitators
Krishna Maya’s personal transformation and the impact she’s making in her community are the result of great facilitators and a supportive development model.
Outreach International’s Human Development Facilitators play a vital role in the community-led approach. Their mission: to understand community needs, encourage group participation, and support community members as they take charge of their own futures.
Lumanti has worked with Outreach International since 2017. For nearly a decade, she’s supported communities in Tallo Nallu, Pahade Thapa Gaun, and Farsidol. With an executive MBA and a master’s in political science, she brings both experience and insight to her work.

Community-Led Development Inspiring Gender Equality
Krishna Maya’s growth reflects a broader truth across Outreach International communities: gender equality isn’t just a concept based in fairness. Outreach communities have proven time and again that when women rise, entire communities rise. When the power, ingenuity, and intelligence of women is unleashed, men, children, everyone, reap the rewards.
Lumanti describes Krishna Maya as someone who “embodies the spirit of empowerment and resilience.” She also noticed that Krishna’s transformation inspired change within her family.
Her husband’s belief in her leadership fueled Krishna Maya’s courage to imagine a new and better future. His support showed that gender roles can evolve and when they do, everyone benefits.
In Farsidol, 84% of the community organization members are women. Of these, 10 women serve as community leaders making up 71% of the local leadership team. Across Outreach International programs, women represent 75% of all participants. Among them, 661 women are in leadership roles, accounting for 70% of all community leaders organization-wide.
Krishna Maya’s story is proof that when women participate, entire communities flourish.
“I feel incredibly happy when I see the positive changes happening in Farsidol, knowing that I am part of that change,” Krishna Maya shares with a bright smile.
